Open two online casinos side by side and the lobbies will look nothing alike. Different colours, different navigation, different names above the door. Then start opening games and the same titles appear in both, because neither casino built any of them.
The operator licenses the games, arranges them and takes a cut of the turnover. The software comes from a fairly small group of studios, most of which you have never heard of and several of which now belong to each other. Once you can read the provider name in a game’s info panel, a lot of marketing stops working on you.
Three reasons, and only one of them is about quality.
The first is that two casinos running the same studios are, for practical purposes, running the same casino. If both carry Evolution live tables and the Pragmatic Play slot catalogue, the games are not what separates them. Payout speed, licensing and terms are. Choosing between them on “game selection” when the selections overlap by eighty percent is choosing on nothing.
The second is that studios have house styles, and those styles are about volatility rather than polish. Nolimit City and Hacksaw Gaming build games designed to take your money for two hundred spins and then hand back a large multiple; Play’n GO and NetEnt sit far closer to the middle. Neither approach is better, but discovering the difference by accident with real money is an expensive way to learn it.
The third is the one almost nobody writes about, and it is the reason this page exists at all: the same game can ship at several different RTP settings, and the operator chooses which one you get.
A studio does not build one version of a slot. It builds one game with a set of configurable maths models, and licenses them to operators as a menu. Blueprint, Play’n GO, Pragmatic Play and others all publish multiple configurations of popular titles, and the spread between the best and worst version of the same game is commonly four to six percentage points.
That is enormous. A game at 96.2% and the identical-looking game at 91.5% share artwork, sounds, bonus rounds and name. The reels look the same because they are the same. The only visible difference is a number in the information panel, which is precisely why you should read it before your first spin at any operator you have not used before.
The UK Gambling Commission’s rules effectively force operators to surface the figure, which is why UK-facing lobbies almost always show it in the game info panel. Elsewhere it is voluntary, and an operator that publishes RTP per title without being made to is telling you something real about how it does business. That single behaviour correlates better with a casino being good to deal with than any welcome bonus does.
Every studio in this table appears in at least one casino we have reviewed, and the last column is taken directly from those reviews rather than from a marketing page.

A note on Evolution, because the name comes up constantly. It began as a live-dealer company and still dominates that category so completely that most players have never sat at a live table run by anyone else. Then it went shopping.
NetEnt in 2020, which brought Red Tiger with it. Big Time Gaming in 2021, which is the studio that invented the Megaways engine now licensed across hundreds of other studios’ games. Nolimit City in 2022. Add Ezugi from 2018 and one company owns the live floor, the biggest slot mechanic of the last decade and several of the most recognisable slot brands in the business.
Whether that concentration is bad for players is genuinely arguable. It has certainly not made the live product worse. It does mean that “we offer games from over sixty providers” is a much emptier claim than it sounds, because a good number of those sixty answer to the same board.
Live dealer is a physical business, which makes it different from slots in a way worth understanding. Somebody has to build a studio, employ dealers in shifts, run cameras and encode video around the clock. That is a capital and staffing problem, not a software problem, and it is why the field is small.
Evolution operates studios across Europe, North America and Asia, including dedicated rooms built and branded for individual operators. Playtech runs its own live operation at meaningful scale. Ezugi, now inside Evolution, specialises in tables built for specific regional markets. Pragmatic Play entered later and has grown quickly.
When a casino advertises “exclusive live tables”, what it has usually bought is a branded room inside somebody else’s studio, with its own dealers and its own table limits. That is a real thing rather than pure marketing, and it typically means better-staffed tables at peak hours. It does not mean the operator built anything.
No licensed game reaches a lobby without independent certification, and three names do most of that work.
| Lab | Founded | What it certifies |
|---|---|---|
| Gaming Laboratories International (GLI) | 1989 | RNG behaviour, game maths and platform integrity across most US and international jurisdictions |
| eCOGRA | 2003 | Game fairness, published payout percentages and operator conduct standards |
| iTech Labs | 2004 | RNG certification and RTP verification, widely used across European and Australian markets |
What certification actually guarantees is narrower than most players assume. It confirms the random number generator is properly random and that the game pays back what its own paytable claims. It does not mean the game is generous, and it does not mean the operator selected the generous configuration of it. Fair and favourable are different words.
Thirty seconds of work, and it is the single most useful habit on this entire site.
If an operator makes any of that hard to find, treat it as information. There is no technical reason to hide a figure the regulator already made you calculate.
Each review in our register lists the studios behind that operator’s lobby, so you can see the overlap for yourself before choosing between two brands that look different and are not.

Asia licenses less online casino play than any other region on this page, so read the market column before anything else. The Philippines is the clear exception: PAGCOR licenses domestic play through its Electronic Gaming Licensing Department, and since the offshore POGO regime was abolished outright a site reachable from inside the country is legal only with a domestic licence and a verifiable PAGCOR seal. The PIGO operators above are integrated resorts, which means their games run on real tables and machines inside the building rather than on a software server. Georgia and Armenia are Western Asia geographically and are licensed by the Revenue Service of Georgia — note that Georgian citizens must be 25, while visiting foreign nationals may play from 18. Most of the rest of the region licenses nothing: India banned real-money online gaming outright in 2025, and China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Japan and South Korea all prohibit or heavily restrict online casino play for residents.
*Bonus figures are indicative and change often — always confirm the current offer and the full T&Cs on the operator’s own site. Minimum age 18–25 depending on jurisdiction — 21 across the United States and the Philippines, and 25 for Georgian citizens. Play only where it’s legal for you, and only what you can afford to lose — support is at BeGambleAware.org and your local helpline.
Evolution, by revenue and by reach, and the gap is not close. It dominates live dealer almost entirely and, through NetEnt, Red Tiger, Big Time Gaming, Ezugi and Nolimit City, owns a large share of the slot bench as well. Pragmatic Play is the biggest independent by volume of releases.
Not while you are playing, and not on a whim. What it can do is license a different configuration of the same game from the studio, and studios routinely ship several. The figure in the game’s information panel is the one that applies to the version you are sitting at, which is why it is worth reading.
Through the maths of the specific title, yes; through the studio’s reputation, no. A Nolimit City slot and a NetEnt slot at the same published RTP cost you the same over time, but the Nolimit game will deliver that result far more violently. Judge the number, not the logo.
A middleman that gives an operator access to dozens of studios through a single integration rather than negotiating each separately. Relax Gaming and Pragmatic Play both run one alongside their own studios. It is why a small casino can list two thousand games without a large commercial team, and part of why lobbies overlap so heavily.
Sometimes for the table games, rarely for the slots. An exclusive blackjack variant is ordinary blackjack with different table branding and possibly better rules, which is checkable. An exclusive slot is an ordinary slot with an exclusivity badge. In both cases the published figures decide it, not the label.
Licensed operators display the certifying lab’s mark, usually in the footer, and the regulator’s own register confirms which platforms and games are approved. GLI, eCOGRA and iTech Labs do most of this work. A certificate covers a specific build in a specific jurisdiction rather than the company as a whole.
Founding years, headquarters and ownership above are matters of public record; the “carried by” column is generated from the provider lists in our own casino reviews and changes as those are updated. Notable titles are illustrative rather than exhaustive. See how we test.
