Every game on this site is priced, and the price is not hidden — it is arithmetic. A single-zero roulette wheel keeps 2.70% of everything staked through it, a slot keeps somewhere between 2% and 8%, and blackjack played perfectly still keeps about 0.5%. Those numbers are the whole business model, and no run of luck, betting pattern or system changes them.
This page is not here to tell you to stop. It is here because the same arithmetic that makes a casino profitable makes it possible to lose more than you meant to, and because the tools that prevent that are built into every properly licensed operator and almost nobody uses them. Below: what the maths actually guarantees, the controls you already have, the national registers that can lock you out of every licensed site at once, and where to find a real person to talk to in the markets we cover.
The house edge is not a tendency or a long-run average that a good night can beat. It is the fixed proportion of each stake that the rules hand to the operator, applied every time you bet. Play long enough and your results converge on it; play briefly and variance can put you well above or below it, which is exactly why a winning session proves nothing about the next one.
Two consequences are worth stating plainly. The first is that total amount staked matters more than stake size: a hundred £1 spins costs the same in expectation as one £100 spin, but takes far longer and feels like far less. The second is that speed is a cost. A slot resolving every three seconds prices a session at hundreds of bets an hour, which is why an 8% edge on a fast game empties a bankroll quicker than a 5.26% edge on a slow one. The house edge for every game we cover lists the real figures.
There is no strategy on this site, or anywhere else, that turns a negative expectation into a positive one. Basic strategy at blackjack and optimal play at video poker reduce the edge; they do not remove it. Anything sold as a system that beats the house is selling you the system, not the win.
None of these is about how much money is involved. A person betting £5 a week can be in trouble and a person betting £500 a week can be fine — what separates them is the pattern, not the amount.
Two or three of these together is worth acting on now rather than after the next session.
Under any licence worth the name these are mandatory, free, and available without explaining yourself to anybody. They are usually filed under Responsible Gambling, Player Protection or Safer Gambling in account settings, and a licensed operator must apply a limit immediately when you tighten it — only loosening it is allowed to be slow.
| Control | What it does | Reversing it |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit limit | Caps what you can pay in per day, week or month. The most effective single control, because it binds before you play rather than during. | Tightening is immediate; loosening usually waits out a cooling period of 24 hours to 7 days |
| Loss limit | Caps net losses over a period, counting winnings back in. Useful where deposits are irregular. | Same asymmetry as deposit limits |
| Wager or stake limit | Caps total turnover or the maximum single bet, regardless of whether you are up or down. | Immediate to tighten |
| Reality check | An interruption at a set interval showing elapsed time and net position. Set it to 15 or 30 minutes — the point is to break the session, not to inform you. | Changeable at any time |
| Time-out / cool-off | Locks the account for a fixed short period, typically 24 hours to 6 weeks. Marketing must stop with it. | Cannot be lifted early — that is the feature |
| Self-exclusion | Locks the account for a long fixed term, commonly 6 months to 5 years or permanently, and requires the operator to close marketing and delete you from campaigns. | Cannot be lifted before the term ends |
| Account closure | Ends the relationship. Weaker than self-exclusion, because nothing stops a new account later. | Immediate |
One practical note: a limit set at one operator binds only that operator. If more than one account is involved, the national registers below are the mechanism that actually works.
A national register is the difference between blocking yourself from one site and blocking yourself from every licensed site in a jurisdiction with one form. Where one exists, every operator holding that licence is legally required to check it before opening an account or accepting a bet — so it also blocks the sites you have not signed up to yet.
| Market | Regulator | Register | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | Gambling Commission (UKGC) | GAMSTOP | Every UKGC-licensed online operator, for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years. One registration, all sites. |
| Germany | GGL | OASIS | All German-licensed online and land-based operators. Registered through any licensed operator or the regulator; minimum three months. |
| Spain | DGOJ | RGIAJ | The General Register of Gambling Access Bans, covering all Spanish-licensed operators. |
| Portugal | SRIJ | Registo de autoexclusão | All SRIJ-licensed online operators. Registered with the regulator rather than the operator. |
| Romania | ONJN | Self-exclusion register | Operators licensed in Romania, on request to the regulator or the operator. |
| Ontario, Canada | AGCO / iGaming Ontario | Provincial self-exclusion | Registered operators in Ontario. Other provinces run their own schemes through their lottery corporation. |
| United States | State regulators (NJ, PA, MI, WV, CT) | State voluntary exclusion lists | Per state, not national. A New Jersey exclusion does not bind a Michigan operator, so each state you play in needs its own. |
| Brazil | SPA (Ministry of Finance) | Operator-level, mandatory | Licensed operators must offer self-exclusion and honour it. Check the operator’s own account settings. |
| Philippines | PAGCOR | Restricted-persons list | PAGCOR-licensed venues and domestic online operators. |
| Georgia | Revenue Service | Prohibited-persons register | Licensed gambling operators in Georgia; registration is made with the Revenue Service. |
| Malta | MGA | Operator-level | Malta has no player-facing national register — MGA licensees must run their own exclusion. If you hold accounts at several MGA sites, each needs doing separately. |
Every organisation below is independent of any casino, free to the person calling, and confidential. Every number below was checked against the organisation’s own site or its national regulator, with the hours it actually operates, because a free 24-hour line and a weekday afternoon line are not the same promise. Confirm any number at source before relying on it — helplines change, and a wrong number at the wrong moment is worse than none.

If money is the immediate problem rather than the gambling, a free debt advice service is a separate and equally useful call — most countries have one, and none of them charge.
Each of these is common enough to be worth naming, and each fails for a reason rather than by bad luck.
You cannot self-exclude on another adult’s behalf, and confronting someone with a total is usually counter-productive — the number becomes the argument. What tends to help more: describing what you have noticed rather than what you conclude, asking what they want to happen rather than proposing it, and knowing one concrete option before the conversation so there is somewhere for it to go.
Every organisation in the table above supports affected family members as well as players, and most run a separate line or forum for exactly that. You are allowed to call them first, before saying anything at all, and you do not need the other person’s permission to do it.
If money is already at risk, practical steps exist that do not require the other person’s agreement: separating accounts, removing yourself as a guarantor, and — in many countries — a gambling block on your own cards and bank. Most retail banks now offer one for free, applied instantly and reversible only after a delay.
Real-money play is 18+ across the UK and Europe and 21+ in most regulated US states. Age verification is not optional for a licensed operator and cannot be deferred until a withdrawal — a site that lets you deposit before proving your age is telling you something about the rest of its compliance.
Everything on this site that involves money involves a licensed operator only. Every practice table here uses valueless chips, pays nothing, and cannot be linked to a payment method. Our testing method sets out what removes an operator from consideration entirely, and an absent or unverifiable licence is top of that list.
It depends on whether your market has a national register. In the UK, GAMSTOP covers every UKGC-licensed site with one registration, including sites you have never used. In Germany, Spain, Portugal and Romania the equivalent register covers all locally licensed operators. In the United States it is per state, and in Malta and Brazil exclusion is handled operator by operator, so several accounts mean several forms. In no case does it cover unlicensed sites, which is one of several reasons not to use them.
No, and that is the point of it. A self-exclusion runs its full term — commonly six months to five years — and no operator or regulator can shorten it on request. A time-out is the shorter version if you want a break rather than a commitment, typically 24 hours to six weeks, and it is equally irreversible while it runs.
They involve no money, no account and no payment method, and nothing you do in them can be converted into a stake or a prize. The one honest caution is that a practice table pays out on a schedule nobody is funding, so it can leave an impression of how often a real game pays that the real game will not match. If you are currently self-excluded, the safest reading of your own decision is to skip the demos too.
A deposit limit, set once while you are not playing. It works because it binds before the decision rather than during it, it applies to every session automatically, and loosening it takes days while tightening it takes seconds. A reality check every 15 or 30 minutes is the useful second, because losing track of elapsed time is a far more common problem than losing track of money.
No. Setting limits, taking a time-out or self-excluding are player rights under every licence we accept, they cost nothing, and they cannot be used as grounds to void a balance or refuse a withdrawal. Your funds remain yours and must be returned. An operator that penalises you for using them is one to report to its regulator, and one we would remove from our own listings.
Not in a casino, no. The closest anything gets is full-pay video poker at optimal strategy, which returns about 99.54% — still a loss of roughly 46p per £100 staked, repeated for as long as you play. Advantage play exists in narrow circumstances and is neither a strategy this site teaches nor one that survives being used at scale. Treat every stake as spent at the moment it is placed, because in expectation a fraction of it already is.
